A great opportunity for those who want a challenge of an event here in Spain! Take into account that this is a high-level chess event where anyone can participate. Here you will learn all the details to take part in the Festival Sant Joan d’Alacant!

It is an open international tournament, accomplishing IM and GM norms is possible in this tournament. The tournament will take place in the Hotel Kaktus Albir, a 4-star-hotel and one of the best in Alicante.

The province of Alicante is famous for its chess history, having seen top-class chess tournaments. This province has seen players like Garry Kasparov, Karpov, Shirov, Adams, and others.

The Festival Sant Joan d'Alacant will start on June 5th and finish on June 10th, after 9 rounds in total. There is a special deal for the people that stays in the hotel during the tournament, these are the prices:

  • 1 adult 84€/day (full board)
  • 2 adults 128€/day (full board)
  • 2 adults + 1 child 170€/day (full board)
  • 3 adults 179,20€/day (full board)
  • 2 adults + 2 children 192€/day (full board)

Which is less than what you would have to pay in case of visiting the hotel casually.

If you decide to inscribe, you must know that the inscription fee is 55€ per player. Players who participated in the previous edition of this tournament get a 5€ discount. Also, players that were federated in Mutxamel, Sant Joan o Alfaz del Pi clubs will have a 5€ discount as well.

So, if you participated in the previous tournament and you are federated in any of these clubs you get a 10 euros discount in total.

2 formats of the same tournament

Now, you also have to know there are 2 formats of the same tournament. There is the III Open international and the U1800 version. If you or your kids are below rating 1800 it is recommendable to have them participate in this tournament.

So you don’t’ confuse, here is the difference between both chess tournaments:

III Open Sant Joan d'Alacant

It is a classic tournament, time controls being 90 minutes +30 second increment per move. People from all around the world can participate, and there will be grandmasters and International masters.

Open U1800 Sant Joan de Alacant

No players rated over 1800 can participate, they have to take part in the open section of the tournament. It's a Rapid tournament, time control being 30 minutes +30 seconds increment per move.

This tournament is also valid for rating and it will be watched by the same International Arbiter.

How long is the tournament and what are the prizes?

There are two formats of the tournament, so we will give you the dates for both respectively:

III Open Sant Joan d'Alacant

This tournament will start on June 5th and will finish on June 10th, after 9 rounds, they are scheduled like this:

  1. Round, Tuesday, July 5, 5:00 p.m.
  2. Round, Wednesday, July 6, 3:30 p.m.
  3. Round, Thursday, July 7, 3:30 p.m.
  4. Round, Friday, July 8, 09:30 a.m.
  5. Round, Friday, July 8, 3:30 p.m.
  6. Round Saturday, July 9, 09:30 a.m.
  7. Round, Saturday, July 9, 3:30 p.m.
  8. Round, Sunday, July 10, 09:30 a.m.
  9. Round, Sunday, July 10, 3:30 p.m.

As you can see, the last three days are going to be the toughest, make sure you prepare and prevent burnout!

There are 4 breaks, you can previously choose which break you want to take, with some regulations. This is in a case of emergency, or that you feel that you have to take a break for a bit, you should always ask first.

Every break has to be asked with a day of anticipation of the game that you have to play.

I Open Sub1800 Sant Joan de Alacant

This tournament is shorter, it just takes 4 days in difference, most days take two rounds to play:

  1. Round, Friday, July 8, 4:30 p.m.
  2. Round, Friday, July 8, 6:30 p.m.
  3. Round, Saturday, July 9, 10:00 a.m.
  4. Round Saturday, July 9 12:00h
  5. Round, Saturday, July 9, 4:30 p.m.
  6. Round, Saturday, July 9, 6:30 p.m.
  7. Round, Sunday, July 10, 10:00 a.m.
  8. Round, Sunday, July 10, 12:00 p.m.

Breaks are not allowed in this tournament, as it is rapid chess, each two hours there must be another game going.

Rules, Time control, and other information

As you know, the tournament is in a Swiss format to the best-off 9 rounds.  The results will count to get any title (GM, IM, FM, or other) and the results will be sent to FIDE and FEDA. Databases can be enriched and improved during the tournament.

Everyone can take pictures and publish them on social media, as long as the players authorize it. Once all the places in the tournament are full inscription will not be possible.

The Open Sant Joan d'Alacant has juicy prizes, here is the list of the prizes in order:

  2. Second 700€
  3. Third 500€
  4. Fouth 300€
  5. Fifth 200€
  6. Sixth 150€
  7. Seventh 120€
  8. Eighth 100€
  9. Alicante Champion * 100€
  10. U2200 Champion 100€
  11. U2000 Champion 100€

There are also prizes for the best veteran (+50 years old) and the best U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 players!
